It remains difficult to really size up this market. Which company/technology will prevail?--I can't say.

Clearly the Big Boys (AT&T, Lucent, Sony, Intel, IBM, etc) are interested in digital audio. However, each of them seem to have their own standard and format that are being touted to a fragmented billion $ industry that is currently like a deer mezmorized by a car's headlights...Meanwhile the MP3 format is becoming more visible and adopted.

However, the MP3 format is only a temporary phenomenom, but, it is extremely important to the current music revolution (an analyst at Forrester Research recently stated that by Christmas of this year that
the sale of digital audio players will increase from 200,000 units sold to 1 million to 2 million units). As MP3 grows in popularity it will have to be replaced by a format that is compatible to a distribution method that the music industry can profit from.

I wish I knew which companys would emerge as the digital music leaders.

SanDisk (SNDK) has a popular "compact flash" solution (storage media) that will most likely appear in digital music devices. I don't own any SNDK...a bit too pricey at the moment.

I did decide to roll the dice with e.Digital Corporation(EDIG)... a bulletin board stock that has a relationship with Lucent and Intel (and several other companies). It is beleived that EDIG will represent Lucent at an upcoming meeting of SDMI. EDIG's MicroOST Audio file management system is being used in Lucent's digital player. Nonetheless, I don't feel comfortable recommending EDIG to anyone.

Just my 2 cents,
