No, not with better will, I understood exactly your feeling. You know I mentioned the friend I admired so much who died recently, the man who was a strong advocate for the abolition of capital punishment? I quoted him as saying, about that issue and the fact that so many of those sentenced to death are terrible people, "It's not about them, it's about us." Sometimes you have to do something for someone not because you like or admire them, but because you don't want to relinquish your claim, in your own eyes, to being a decent human being. And of course when one's pity is aroused, one isn't going through a process of evaluating the object of it, one is just feeling so bad for them.
