I guess that was it - nothing new:

"the immense wave of corporate mergers and restructurings currently engulfing the telecoms industry" - going back to the telegraph, this has always happened in telecom - competition, consolidation, monopoly, competition, consolidation .... you get the picture. I look for global consolidation to pick up significantly over next 10 years. If history repeats itself, there will be just a few major telecoms who will control the vast majority of traffic = like it is in USA.

"mobile networks may be the answer to the problem of the "local loop" - the problem in the local loop is data not voice and residential wireless fiber is quite a ways off. I believe XDSL & Cable will solve the problem. I do believe wireless voice could eclipse wired voice at some point.
