David:

I did in fact respond to you. I suggested that you look up their recent numbers.

Hyundai's numbers are also worth knowing. They made a loss on their overall business ($112.0 million), but made a profit on semis of $114.0 million.

Incidentally, according to IDC, the Dram market fell from $19.8 billion to $14.0 billion (1997 to 1998). Samsung held 20% of the Dram market, while Hyundai (without L.G.) held 12% (up from 8%). Mu came in third at 9.2% (just a bit lower than the 18% often touted). L.G held 8%. Koreans moved up from 34% of market to 41%. The 64 mbit chip fell more than 80% in price last year as opposed to a normal annualized decline of 28%.

By the way, Samsung expects to do $5.35 billion in semis this year, (up 13% y-o-y if they manage to do this). To my knowledge, Samsung is the only firm actually producing and shipping 256 Mbit chips (.18um) in quantity. They are also alone in being able to produce Rambus chips at the moment as far as I know. You might also check out Samsung's yields.

Best, Earlie
