He was still wet behind the ears when the Internet was established as a device for university contractors and government agencies to share information on joint projects. In 1981, when Gore was becoming a success in Congress, thanks to help from his late father, the former Senator from Tennessee, I set up one of the first commercial applications for investors on the Internet, using a host computer in Michigan. If anyone is looking for someone in Congress who WAS influential in broadening and commercializing the use of the Internet, the most likely person was Congressman Markey (Mass.), who was helpful in getting rid of the AT&T monopoly on local access.
