Leland,

I believe you've got it regarding IS-95. An electronic serial number, combined with some "randomization" function and then permutation with some long code and you get something very hard to break quickly.

This reminds me of my satellite dish days back in the early 80s. For years we enjoyed watching a lot of stuff that was in the clear, no scrambling. Then Jacobs, Viterbi et al at Linkabit developed the Videocipher. Engineer was probably involved with this. Anyway....At some point I heard that a group of researchers, using distributed computers around the world, over a period of three months, had cracked the DES(US gov't Digital Encryption Standard) then used in the Videocipher!! The Vidoecipher folks weren't worried though. The "seed keys" in the transmission data stream were changed (I believe) 2 times per second! Not much point trying to crack the system that way.

Leland, if you have a copy of Eudora.... the latest versions anyway...they implement PGP(Pretty Good Privacy) which is a public-key encryption system. You probably already know that. I haven't upgraded my version yet... not much need to encrypt email yet but maybe someday.

BTW, I notice you're a 3rd degree... can I assume you teach somewhere?

Best

Walt
