Don't know about the mania part, but it is commonly believed that Lincoln suffered from major depression. That is a disease I know far too much about, and I can assure that Lincoln was never totally incapacitated which I believe is essential for a diagnosis of major depression. Had he tried to claim sick leave or disability pay because he felt rotten, we would not get it even today. Of course, with such pay available, people who might have struggled on, may succomb to depression.
Here is a quotation, whence I know not (pace gypsy), from
mediconsult.com

"I am now the most miserable man living. If what I
feel were equally distributed to the whole human
family, there would be not one cheerful face on earth.
Whether I shall ever be better, I cannot tell. I awfully
forebode I shall not. To remain as I am is impossible. I
must die or be better it appears to me."
--Abraham Lincoln
