It is doubtful that they will launch a full scale attack of Taiwan, partly because they want it intact, and partly because if they play their cards right, they can get it without a fight. That is one reason that they are being careful with Hong Kong--- not only do they not want to kill the goose laying the golden eggs, but they don't want re- unification to be so fearsome a prospect to the Taiwanese. If there is enough intimidation, a sense of the United States disengaging from the region, and a sense that the Communists will not come down to hard on the existing institutions in Taiwan, then the Tawainese will negotiate a surrender.

How do you account for the Chinese saying they would bomb Los Angeles if we did not back down during their demonstration of strength regarding Taiwan?

Have we not given up our base in the Philippines? Yes, the volcano helped, but they got use out. That was an important base for the area.
