SAN FRANCISCO, March 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Snap LLC, the Internet portal company from NBC and CNET (www.snap.com), today launched a preview version of a new, free portal service designed for higher-speed Internet users (formerly known by the code-name Snap ''Cyclone''). The new service is the first of its kind from an Internet portal company, offering higher-speed Internet users a next-generation experience that showcases multimedia content, search and navigation functionality.

Snap.com for higher-speed Internet users will offer an experience that showcases all rich media types -- video, audio, gaming, animation, telephony, and more -- built atop the powerful Snap.com Internet directory and search service. The new service will feature rich media content in key Snap.com topics: News, Finance, Sports, Entertainment, Television, Music, Video, Games, Movies, Computing, Shopping and Travel.

At launch, Snap.com for higher-speed users features the largest rich media directory in the world, built by Snap's own editorial team. This hand-built directory includes listings for rich media sites in over 300 sub-categories and growing each day. The proprietary rich media directory enables users to retrieve sites spotlighting video, audio, animation, and/or interactivity.

Coinciding with today's preview launch of the new service, Snap today announced 20 new content, distribution, technology and advertising agreements, building on the impressive roster of 29 industry-leading partners announced in January, 1999.

Said Halsey Minor, Chief Executive Officer, Snap LLC: ''Today's preview launch of Snap's new portal service for higher-speed Internet users marks the beginning of the next phase of the Internet portal market, and Snap is proud to have taken a bold leadership position in this new space. By working together with a particularly strong array of partners, this new service truly delivers on Snap's promise to bring users the best, most relevant Internet content and services, across all media types.''

New content partners announced today include: A&E Television Networks, Birdhouse Projects Inc., Film.com, Honkworm, House of Blues Digital, LAUNCH Media, The Mountain Zone, Pseudo Programs Inc., and World Wrestling Federation (WWF). New charter advertisers announced today include Bank of America, Staples.com, Tower Records and Toyota. (For full details, see related release, ''NBC and CNET's Snap Announces New Content and Advertising Partners for Next Generation Internet Portal for Higher Speed Users'').

Snap today also announced that Snap.com for higher-speed users will be distributed by high-speed Internet services offered by Cable & Wireless USA, Flashcom, iBEAM Broadcasting Corp., InReach Internet, I3S, Reach Communications, and Advanced Radio Telecom Corp. Each carrier will make available customized versions of this new Snap service, developed exclusively for their users and communities (For full details, see related release, ''NBC and CNET's Snap Announces New Distribution and Carriage Partners for Next Generation Internet Portal for Higher Speed Users'').

Snap.com for higher-speed users also will be available as an option, free of charge at www.snap.com, designed for all Internet users with higher-speed capabilities. Those users also may access the new service directly at speed.snap.com.

In addition, Snap today unveiled a new rich media search technology partnership with Inktomi Corp (Nasdaq: INKT - news), a leading provider of Web search engine technologies and scalable Internet infrastructure software (For more details, see related release, ''NBC and CNET's Snap Announces New Content and Advertising Partners for Next Generation Internet Portal for Higher Speed Users'').

Today's newly-announced content and charter advertising partners join 21 content and e-commerce partners that last month announced their participation in Snap.com for higher-speed users, including: APB Online, Bloomberg, CMP Media's TechWeb, CNBC/Dow Jones Business Video, CNET, INTERVU Inc., iVillage Inc., MSNBC, NBC Entertainment, Preview Travel, Quokka Sports, Resort Sports Network, RollingStone.com, SonicNet, Sony Online Entertainment, Spinner.com, Tower Records, UltimateTV, VideoSeeker, and WeatherLabs.

The new service's new carriage and distribution partners join eight other partners that last month announced their carriage of the Snap.com for higher-speed users: Bell Atlantic Internet Solutions, GTE InterNetworking, SBC Internet Services, Epoch Internet, JPSnet, DSLnetworks, EastLink Cable and Triax Communications.

Additional distribution, content, e-commerce, shopping, technology and advertising partnerships will be unveiled in the coming months for the new Snap.com for higher-speed users.

NOVL introduced some new caching software, so maybe that's the problem...I remember hearing that NOVL had an INKT killer during the last big tech conference, and when it didn't materialize, INKT exploded from 52 to 72 in 2 days. Now they have unveiled their product, so let's play ball.
