My mom was Protestant and my dad was Catholic. They could not get married in a Catholic church because my mom would not convert. She insisted on raising us kids as Protestant. Even that did not work well, at least in my case.

I remember sitting in a hot church as a kid, on a wooden bench, dressed up in a suit & tie. Suddenly the chubby kid next to me fainted. That's when I decided that church religion was not for me. I did not think that God's method of operation was primarily to bribe and/or threaten people to get them to be "good." I always felt closer to God when I was out in nature.
