Coach Reduces Terabyte Backup Windowto 4 Hours With Ampex DST Storage Libraries March 22, 1999 09:15 AM REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 22, 1999--Coach in New York, a leading designer and manufacturer of fine quality leather goods, has significantly reduced its backup window with the installation of two Ampex DST(R) 712 automated cartridge libraries to backup its growing stores of data. Performing nightly backups of 3/4 terabyte of corporate business data, Coach chose the Ampex DST 712 systems for their superior capacity, speed, scalability and reliability. The DST 712 products will be supplied by Ampex Data Systems, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ampex Corporation AXC . Coach's Brian Demay, senior manager of systems, learned first of Ampex's digital tape storage products at the UNIX Expo nearly two years ago. Working closely with Ampex to design a suitable storage architecture, Demay successfully implemented a backup system to accommodate Coach's terabyte-level needs. Replacing legacy tape systems with two Ampex DST 712 automated cartridge libraries, Coach has successfully reduced backup time and is now structured to store its growing data files. "With over 700 gigabytes of data and an increase of approximately one gigabyte a day, it was impossible for us to complete daily backups before the nightly batch load began," says Brian Demay. "Just a few months ago, our backup window took anywhere between 18 and 28 hours -- now we're down to 4 hours with Ampex DST 712 libraries." "Coach is a progressive, can-do company, relying heavily on expandable technologies to accommodate its growing needs," says John Hennessy, Ampex's director of business development. "Reducing Coach's cost-per-megabyte of storage to less than three cents, the Ampex DST system also lowers overhead by eliminating the need to manually track and store numerous data cartridges." Ampex DST Product Line Ampex DST digital archive systems are ideal for a variety of data-intensive applications. These applications include archive and retrieval of video and images in the broadcast and post-production environments, data warehousing, backup and restore of very large databases (VLDB), hierarchical storage management (HSM), or network file systems and high bandwidth data acquisition. The company's innovative technology reduces the cost of storage to pennies per megabyte, simplifies media management and lowers overhead by reducing the need to track and house large numbers of cartridges. The storage density increase also improves file access time, as well as backup and restore speeds, by minimizing cartridge exchanges.
