Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:CPQ) today announced Compaq Intranet Services for Microsoft Site Server 3.0. This new suite of value-added lifecycle services allows Compaq to deliver intranet solutions to enterprise customers worldwide, reducing their overall implementation risk, minimizing "false starts" and costly mistakes, shortening overall time to results, and maximizing their return on investment.

Customers implementing Compaq's Intranet Services for Site Server 3.0 can:

--Establish communications standards and presentation guidelines for the organization's intranet content creation, publishing, and deployment

--Rapidly deploy a customized pilot intranet site within a Windows NT environment

--Publish, index, distribute and share information on an enterprise intranet faster and more easily

--Search for information across multiple intranet and Internet web sites, across both Windows NT and non-Windows NT file servers, Microsoft Exchange Public Folders, as well as Microsoft SQL Server and other ODBC databases

--Leverage Microsoft Site Server 3.0 for intranet-based Knowledge Management

--Organize and manage information about site content and users more efficiently

Compaq's intranet services are delivered by specially trained consultants called Site Server Wizards and are based upon Compaq's global Internet/intranet expertise, proven experience with architectures and structured lifecycle services methodologies, and a worldwide base of Windows NT resources.

"Compaq Services is in a unique position to assist our customers with their enterprise intranet computing needs," said, Russ Stockdale, Director, Server Applications Marketing, Microsoft Corporation. "Our customers now have an easier way to implement their Site Server 3.0 solutions using Compaq's extensive knowledge of the intranet and worldwide base of Windows NT-trained experts. Compaq integration and development consultants deliver service and support that provides tremendous value throughout the complete lifecycle of a customer's intranet site."

"Compaq Services provided a complete solution based on Microsoft Site Server 3.0 for us to securely publish and distribute public and private information to members of our worldwide organization," said Jacques Ohannessian, IT Manager, International Basketball Federation (FIBA). "The powerful combination of Microsoft Site Server 3.0 technology and Compaq Services' vast expertise and capability allowed Compaq to successfully plan, design, and implement an intranet and extranet solution that uniquely meets our business and IT needs."

Helping Customers Thrive in a Global Online Business Environment

Compaq Service's next generation networks initiative, announced in February, provides consulting and integration services to help customers build adaptive, flexible technology infrastructures to meet their current and future business needs. This initiative is a cornerstone of Compaq's broader vision addressing the future of the Internet-connected enterprise, in which communities of partners conduct commerce in a global, online business environment.

With today's news, Compaq is also building on its Frontline Partnership with Microsoft to offer customers services to help them plan, design, implement and manage intranet solutions quickly and safely using the latest Microsoft BackOffice and Windows NT technology. Compaq's Intranet Services for Site Server 3.0 leverage Compaq's expertise in next generation networks and infrastructure architecture solutions as well as in Microsoft technology.

Services Portfolio for Microsoft Site Server 3.0

Compaq offers four intranet services to support the implementation of Microsoft Site Server 3.0 that are designed to meet customers' current and future needs. These services are the Intranet Assessment Service, the Intranet Planning Service, the Intranet Pilot Service, and the Intranet Infrastructure Design Service:

--Intranet Assessment Service -- helps customers examine the current state of their intranet, assess their degree of readiness for adopting new technologies, and establish a road map to move forward.

--Intranet Planning Service -- is designed to help customers understand their Web computing and business solutions requirements. This service covers the full spectrum of planning activities, from up-front needs analysis to the identification of key solution objectives, focus areas, and potential projects.

--Intranet Pilot Service -- helps customers rapidly design and implement a custom pilot site as the basis for widely deploying their next generation intranet or extranet solution. A pilot site allows customers to test target solutions, such as knowledge management or information sharing and collaboration, before undertaking a full-scale implementation. The service uses combinations of Web "best practices," demonstrating their benefits through the resulting pilot site.

--Intranet Infrastructure Design Service -- helps customers explore their business, computing, and network infrastructure needs to roll out a customized enterprise-wide intranet solution, meeting their next generation intranet or extranet requirements. This service engagement results in a Web Application Architecture, providing the framework for a successful, scalable solution; and a Web Information Architecture, providing the framework for describing information needs, attributes, life cycle, organization models, relation structures, and presentation techniques unique to the customer's organization. Additionally, consultants assist customers in building a framework to integrate Site Server 3.0 with legacy applications and data sources.

"Today, companies are looking for ways to increase knowledge sharing and collaboration among teams, across continents, and throughout the virtual organization," said R.V. Rao, Director Internet Infrastructure, Compaq Services. "With our extensive experience, Compaq Services helps customers build and support enterprise intranet and extranet solutions based on Microsoft's Site Server 3.0, allowing them to leverage their intranet for new ways of doing business and to increase productivity."

Rich Portfolio of Services and Expertise

In addition to the new services announced today, customers can take advantage of Compaq's existing portfolio of services and its expertise and proven experience on both Microsoft technologies and the Internet:

--Compaq also offers FutureSourcing(SM) services to develop, deploy, and manage outsourced intranet solutions for customers, including end-to-end intranet infrastructure management, applications management, and integration to the customer's Web information sources and databases.

--Compaq customers have access to more than 2,400 Microsoft Certified Systems Engineers and Microsoft Certified Solution Developers, and 15,000 Microsoft-trained professionals.
