Another Big and real player steps in and on SRCM: "TELLABS INTRODUCES NEW FEATURE PACKAGE FOR CABLESPAN(R) SYSTEM Upgrade Will Enable Cable Operators to Provide Integrated Voice, Data And Video Solutions LISLE, Ill., March 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Tellabs announced today the availability of Feature Package 3.0 (FP 3.0) for its CABLESPAN 2300 Universal Telephony Distribution System, which will enable cable operators to provide integrated voice, data and video solutions. With FP 3.0 and its new EXPRESS/path(TM) data feature, Tellabs is introducing a new family of remote service units (RSUs). That family includes a multi-line unit designed to deliver from four to 12 field-upgradable lines of voice and/or high-speed data, such as Internet access, to homes or small businesses without interrupting existing service. Tellabs also is announcing an upgrade of its CABLESPAN Element Management System (EMS), featuring a point-and-click graphical user interface that supports four times as many subscriber lines as any other system in the industry. "Feature Package 3.0 allows cable operators to reduce operating expenses and provide service bundling with a variety of new features not available from any other single system," said Tom Gruenwald, vice president and general manager of the Broadband Media and Network Solutions Groups at Tellabs. "With a single investment, cable operators can get into the competitive market quickly, offering superior voice and data services while proactively managing their networks. CABLESPAN's Feature Package 3.0 satisfies those needs and solidifies Tellabs' position as an industry leader in competitive cable telephony and data solutions." The heart of Tellabs' new feature set is the versatile EXPRESS/path integrated data solution, the first element in the CABLESPAN platform that combines high-speed data services with voice services to the subscriber. The EXPRESS/path feature uses dynamic bandwidth allocation to provide both voice and data services over hybrid fiber-coax (HFC) with optimum efficiency. The EXPRESS/path data feature enables a competitive service strategy for cable operators who want to bundle voice, data and video to their customers, all while leveraging a single HFC network. It provides a means of creating multiple revenue streams from one investment. Future upgrades of the CABLESPAN platform will offer both stand-alone Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and lifeline circuit-switched telephony capabilities, providing cable operators more versatility in their network service offerings and deployment plans. Also showcased in CABLESPAN FP 3.0 is Tellabs' new family of RSUs for deployment at the residence or office. For the first time, these RSUs give operators the advantage of deploying Ethernet-speed data services, via the EXPRESS/path feature, with voice services in a single unit. EXPRESS/path data also can be added to any CABLESPAN RSU at the subscriber's location. Built into the remotes is a cost-saving suite of diagnostics that work in conjunction with the CABLESPAN EMS. With these diagnostics, a cable operator can isolate service problems for almost immediate trouble resolution. This RSU family includes: -- A new multi-line RSU/M indoor/outdoor unit featuring non service- affecting, field-upgradable 4-, 8- or 12-line deployment configurations. -- An upgraded 1- or 2-line RSU indoor/outdoor unit. -- An upgraded 1- or 2-line RiSU (remote indoor service unit) designed especially for international deployments. The RiSU also includes a backup power supply. Tying it all together, the upgraded CABLESPAN EMS provides a robust graphical user interface that can save an operator millions of dollars a year in labor and maintenance costs for managing a telephony and data network. In addition to supporting up to 205,000 subscriber lines, the CABLESPAN EMS allows an operator to thoroughly isolate the source of a service failure before, or in lieu of, dispatching a repair crew. These types of diagnostic features exceed those of any other cable telephony management system in the industry. To date, Tellabs has delivered more than 35,000 CABLESPAN RSUs for HFC applications to customers worldwide. The CABLESPAN system is ideally suited for the deployment of telephone and data services to residential and small- business customers. The system includes a comprehensive family of RSUs that can cost-effectively deliver a wide variety of voice and data services, including access to the Internet and other on-line services, over a variety of transport media. The system can be readily deployed in a single-family residence and shared tenant/multiple dwelling unit applications. Tellabs designs, manufactures, markets and services voice and data transport and network access systems. The company's products are used worldwide by the providers of communications services. Tellabs stock is listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market (TLAB).
