Granola,

If the story is true, it isn't a bear hype. It is saying that the company's operations over the past three years produced less than 1/2 of the total earnings of the company.

I find the situation perplexing. Could all those analysts have missed this fact for this long? Quality of earnings still matters and the fact is financial engineering profits are not quality, recurring earnings. They do not deserve much of a multiple. I could recount all the stories published (warnings) about such matters in the Japanese market in the late 1980's (well, I could recount them if I ran a search for them).

This isn't a knock on the Dell business model for producing computers. I've owned several over the years and although I'll probably opt for the new 400 MHz eMachine at $599 in a week or two, I've always liked the Dell machines I owned and used in the business.

I am simply bewildered at the implications if this story is true.
