Racso: "and Bancboston RS today".

Actually, that was late Friday afternoon and very much contributed to Friday's damage. There have been a couple of others today, but nothing very drastic. IBM is holding up very well.

I did not catch the name of the brokerage house, but there was a woman analyst on CNBC who disagreed with Dan Niles (the BancBoston analyst) who had said on Friday that he could not see any product line which could rescue the overall shortfall in the IBM figures in the last two weeks of March.

She said that 40-50% of 1Q hardware sales are typically in March. She then suggested that a disproportionate amount of the 40-50% are in the last two weeks. I think the same situation might apply at COMPAQ, that is why it is difficult for the company to make a definitive announcement. One or two days sales might make a huge difference.

I think the atmosphere could be further poisoned by DELL. I would expect to see more analysts downgrading their estimates. DELL has an analysts' meeting in two weeks which could also queer the pitch for COMPAQ.
