CPQ CFO Earl Mason has just issued a press release stating, "The board of directors of cpq has insisted that I warn all shareholders and prospective shareholders that I am thoroughly nuts"

rudedog: when a company does use it's on-the-shelf authorisation to "rescue" the share price, it is well advised to do it in a way that maximises the impact: ideally this is when the price has "spiked" to a bottom; the company's buy-back should catch the bounce up, help wash-out the shorts; if it tries to fight the trend it uses up its money to little effect. Of course in extreme situations, the BoD can meet and authorise additional buy-backs.

CPQ will know better than we when to start using its buying power. As you imply, it will be able to time it to coincide with good news - hopefully.
