I disagree. Dell is talking about how it invests its spare cash in the section you quote, not about its options positions. It cleverly hides the latter in its stock repurchase scheme. As I read the 10-K, they don't make money directly, but save it during their buybacks. However they manage it, though, those profits are real, just as the savings they realize on compensation expenses through options grants are real. Both should flow through the financial statements; neither does.
