Shorts covering this week...

This week, the smarter shorts will be covering their positions. We saw effects of AAO and the filing of the PMA push the stock to double digit territory over the past three or four months. (If you think AAO was not instrumental in the rise, don't forget that over 3 million shares of stock were sold in a private placement at the meeting bringing in a whole new crop of investors.)

Now we have ASCRS coming up in three weeks. At that meeting ophthalmologists will see the new beta model systems on display, will hear the successful clinical data being presented (10 or more papers to be presented) and will consider how LTK will fit into their practice. And many will think now is the time to invest in SNRS before FDA approval.

Then there will be the institutional investors that attend the meeting. While some may be waiting until the FDA Panel meeting or later to take a stake, some of the less risk adverse funds may take advantage of the current prices. Certainly, the analysts at the meeting will take note of SNRS. This vision care sector is being scoured for Visx-like future performers.

Since there will only be a month between ASCRS and the FDA announcing the July Panel meeting, it may be a little late for the shorts in at the $10 to $14 level to cover with any profit.

Shorts that are in below the $10 level have a problem. They can go ahead a take a loss now or they can pray that SNRS will not be at the July panel. The choice is lose a little or lose a lot.

My guess is that most shorts will be out this week. This in itself will drive the stock back into double digits.

Just one man's opinion.
