DIRECT ENTRY OF DELL AND COMPAQ VALIDATE INTERNET CACHING MARKET

Novell's New Caching Software to Be Sold Pre-Configured on Dell,

Compaq Servers, Changing Caching Market Dynamics

LOS ALTOS, Calif., March 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Today's announcements of strategic partnerships between Novell, Compaq and Dell are clear evidence that the Internet Caching market is becoming an important business, according to Collaborative Research. "1998 was the year of new caching products and early adopter users," said John Katsaros, president of Collaborative. "With the entry of Dell and Compaq to this market through their strategic partnerships with Novell, we are seeing the signs that typify the transition from Early Adopter to Early Majority markets. This confirms our analysis that caching will grow to become a billion dollar market in just a few years."

Under the strategic partnerships, Novell's Internet Caching System (ICS) software will be sold pre-configured on appliance-optimized, rack-mountable servers from Compaq and Dell. This new combination of pre-configured caching software on standard server platforms from major vendors places a whole new spin on the notion of "black box" network devices, and brings Novell, Dell, and Compaq into direct competition with Cisco Systems and other caching appliance vendors. "Having these major computer companies join the ranks of network device manufacturers should end the discussion as to whether or not this a sustainable market," noted Peter Christy, principal at Collaborative Research. "But it can't be all good news for traditional appliance vendors to turn around and see these aggressive giants in their backyard. From today on, things are going to be different in the caching market."

Collaborative Research has arisen as the industry's premier source of analysis and research into Internet caching and traffic management. Peter Christy goes into greater depth about the implications of the ICS software and Novell's alliance with hardware vendors in his current column at www.caching.com, Collaborative's Internet Caching resource center. In addition, both John Katsaros and Peter Christy will lead a series of workshops related to caching and Internet Traffic Management at the Internet World conference in Los Angles in mid-April.
