Forbes Opposes New I.M.F. Loans For Russia

March 23, 1999
Web posted at 1:10 p.m. EST

(Washington, D.C.) — Steve Forbes, Republican presidential candidate, said today that Washington should oppose new International Monetary Fund loans to Russia.

“If Russian Prime Minister Primakov asks for more IMF loans, the response of the U.S. government should be a categorical ‘No,'” said Mr. Forbes. “Why should U.S. taxpayers send billions of dollars into a failing economic system when we know the money will wind up in the Swiss bank accounts of Russian elites and aid the rebuilding of the Russian military machine?” asked Mr. Forbes.

“Treasury Secretary Rubin now admits part of past IMF loans to Russia were stolen and squandered, yet neither he nor the President rules out future loans,” said Mr. Forbes. “The Clinton-Gore Administration handles taxpayer money like it handles American nuclear secrets — far too sloppily, far too cavalierly.”
