U.S. OPTIONS/Broadcast.com calls well bid, vols up
CHICAGO, March 22 (Reuters) - Implied volatility on Broadcast.com Inc. (Nasdaq:BCST - news) options surged with the stock price on Monday after a published report said the company was considering a merger with Yahoo! Inc. (Nasdaq:YHOO - news).

Business Week's online edition said the Internet portal Yahoo had met with Broadcast.com, which runs streaming video broadcasts over the Internet.

The companies declined to comment.

''That's the sort of deal that makes sense,'' said one options trader.

He said implied volatility on Broadcast.com options, which made their debut on the American Stock Exchange, the Pacific Exchange and the Chicago Board Options Exchange just five weeks ago, climbed to about 120 percent as the stock rallied 31-1/2 to 116-1/2.

Implied volatility, a key factor in pricing options, had held at an average of around 98 percent since the options were first listed.

In other trading, volatility on options on Fore Systems Inc. (Nasdaq:FORE - news), which manufactures network products, remained at lofty levels as speculation of a takeover bid grew, traders said.

''There's definitely something going on there. (Options) premiums are through the roof,'' Larry McMillan, president of options advisory group McMillan Analysis, said.

Implied volatility on the April 20 options ended the day around 115 percent. Options volume was heavy.

Trading in the underlying stock also was brisk. The stock, which gained 1-11/16 to 18-11/16, was the second most actively traded on the Nasdaq.
