About "rational". Maybe that is a good word here. But I'm a little shy of it because we've had a procession of Randians come through here, and the word has picked up a political subtext. But that might merely be my issue.

Your distinction between sentient and rational is good, as is LRR's abstract thought. The sentient part seems to me to be the reason within all life. Even plants know enough to turn toward the sun. Effectively, Life's logic. The rational term contains another logic. It is abstract, but I prefer seeing it as modeling--a proto-tool we have, like our opposable thumb. This is Logic, as commonly used.
What gets me is those who believe logic and Life's logic ever break or are defective. Nonsense. Any irrationality in the organism is in the correlation between the 'cpu' logic and the environment. The perversities are instead in the input/output systems. IE: in the operating system--both personal and societal.
