jack,
I suppose you know that it was "dief the chief" who arranged funding for the Arctic Institute. The founder, the late Don Gill, had to go on a few 3 or 4 day drinking binges with Diefenbaker down in Ottawa to sell it. Don tied in Boreal studies to Dief's "roads to resources" vision over a few jugs. They were two people who had a passion for the Canadian north.....and a jug or two with some good company from time to time....
regards,
teevee

Old Diefs road got stopped about 60 km out of town, they call it the Ingram trail and it is the start of the winter road system north.
When the diamonds first got discovered they should have started turning that winter road into a year round one and probably would have had most of it built now but alas the government, native groups and ecologists are still arguings its route and merits. I figuer they will have it built just about the time the mines shut down:)
