They probably felt obliged to publish it as written, since the author was no longer in any condition to work with an editor. I wonder what might have come out if that had not been the case. The story I heard - it was a long time ago, and I cannot swear to this - was that the first editor rejected it because some of the character portrayals were judged anti-Semitic. What a time Emile would have with that! I also remembered that the suicide was after the first rejection, not many, so I may be wrong. I could probably search the net and find out, but I'm feeling a bit lazy, and labor calls.
