JBL, Thanks for sharing the article.

Must be scary to join an organization in the 1930's and pay for it dearly in the 1950's. It must have been a nightmare for everyone involved in Hollywood.

I think also that there are alot more conservatives than liberals in Hollywood these days.

Melinda

The communists weren't exactly passive in the 40's. They were part of the peace movement while the Germans and Soviets carved up Poland and the Ukraine.

Thanks for posting that JBL... I do take a few issues with George Will's piece (but you knew that...), anyway this was apparently a "lifetime achievement" award which carries a stronger connotation than just a body of work. Kazan's work has been awarded consistently over the years, most recently he had a few pictures in the "100 best" pictures achievement - I don't know how many directors had multiple films in the list, certainly not many, but Kazan had "On the Waterfront" and "Streetcar" (and maybe others). It all comes down to personal ethics I suppose, when someone behaves the way he did.

Anyway my point was that you could see from the audience that only about 25-30% of the people stood and clapped. A lot of people just sat there and to me Kazan seemed uncomfortable too. I think they should have just let this one go, jmo.

JBL--- I was going to reprint the Will piece if no one beat me to it. I'm glad you did!
