Stitch,

I forgot to mention one more scenario for Asian recovery.

It is possible that Japan would not lead but rather follow the recovery. The new leader being China. Zhu Rongji is visiting the US next month. He could bring with him an Easter basket full of golden eggs. We don't get to see him in action as much here but I understand he can jawbone with the best of them.

If he can bring enough optimism for kinder and gentler US China relations, free trade, WTO, no spies, blue sky or whatever, it can generate the sorely needed capital flow back to Asia. Then one thing can lead to another and we all go home happy. Though I think Zhu is one of the best in the global political arena today, I just think the problems are too much even for him.
