Micron Technology shares tumbled, despite the company's stronger-than-expected earnings report on Wednesday. Trouble is, prices of memory chips fell, says analyst Bruce Walicek at BT Alex. Brown. And Micron's aggressive competitive stance could ignite a price war, says Joe Osha at Merrill Lynch. "We think [Micron Technology] is trying to utilize a growing advantage in technology to force weaker players, especially Taiwanese and smaller Korean houses, out of the market," said Osha in a research note. "We believe this is similar to what occurred last year. MU was very aggressive in pushing a great deal of production out in attempts to force out the weaker players, resulting in a price war." Still, many analysts continue to have optimistic outlooks. "The industry is definitely on the rebound," Walicek says. He sees Micron's earnings per share more than doubling to 19 cents in the current quarter from its fiscal second quarter.
