FORE News.... Tuesday March 23, 6:00 am Eastern Time Company Press Release SOURCE: FORE Systems, Inc. FORE Systems Enables Virtual Private Networks and Transparent LAN Services With New Integrated Access Device Demarc 100 Delivers Cost-Effective Managed ATM and Ethernet Services HANNOVER, Germany, and PITTSBURGH, March 23 /PRNewswire/ -- FORE Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: FORE - news), a leading global supplier for service providers building the new public network infrastructure, announced today immediate availability of the Demarc(TM) 100. The new product is a broadband integrated access device (IAD) that serves as a demarcation point for providing both ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) and Ethernet managed services. The announcement was made at the CeBIT '99 Conference and Exposition in Hannover, Germany.
The Demarc 100, which will reside on the end user premises, will help FORE Systems expand its presence in two expanding markets. First, the solution will be deployed by enterprise customers as a virtual private network (VPN) solution to offer converged network services. Additionally, the Demarc 100 will be deployed by service providers to offer transparent LAN services (TLS) to their customers. Both uses of the product will allow customers to implement managed services with increased performance, flexibility and predictable bandwidth management capabilities not found in routers, FRADs (Frame Relay Access Devices) or DSU (Digital Service Unit) products.
Demarc 100 Delivers Converged Services Over Virtual Private Networks
This new solution will be deployed by enterprise customers who want to radically reduce WAN costs by converging their voice and data traffic through deployment of a VPN. According to Vertical Systems (Dedham, Mass.), the worldwide Enterprise ATM WAN switch market (which is used to deliver converged network services) is expected to grow from $694.9 million in 1998 to about $885.1 million in 1999, $1.066.7 billion in 2000, and to about $1,228.7 in 2001 (''ATM and Frame Relay Industry Update'', 1998).
''The Demarc 100 is the first in a family of integrated access device solutions that will provide reliable, secure and flexible managed services at very reasonable prices,'' said Niel Viljoen, senior vice president and general manager of FORE Systems' service provider business unit. ''With this solution, FORE Systems is responding to the needs of enterprise customers who want to deploy converged network solutions over ATM- or Ethernet-based virtual private networks.''
Yankee Group: Transparent LAN Services Revenues on Fast Track
The Demarc 100 will also be used by service providers to offer TLS to their customers. TLS revenues worldwide are on a rapid growth pace, expected by The Yankee Group (Boston, Mass.) to grow from 1998's $304 million to $1.106 billion for 2001, an increase of 264 percent. Over that period, The Yankee Group expects TLS using ATM backbone platforms to dominate the field, representing 76 percent of all TLS revenue by the year 2001 ($842 million of the $1.106 billion).
''The suite of intelligent bandwidth features available on the Demarc 100 make it an ideal solution for service providers seeking to design customized transparent LAN service offerings for their customers,'' added Viljoen. ''The Demarc 100 also gives service providers detailed billing information, allowing them to offer customized and cost-effective pricing plans. The combination of these powerful features enhances the ability of providers to offer and meet customer service level agreements (SLAs).''
Demarc 100 Enables Service Level Agreements
The Demarc 100's intelligent bandwidth management capabilities feature:
-- Traffic Shaping -- Provides more predictable traffic flows and
patterns, enabling optimized performance and network utilization
without the need to over-provision the network.
-- Traffic Policing -- Dynamically administers and manages bandwidth contracts at the required levels of service. These features allow the service provider to offer an array of pricing plans for customers subscribing to a variety of bandwidth speeds.
-- Billing & Monitoring -- Offers a rich array of traffic reporting and analysis capabilities that can be linked to back office systems to support billing, customer service and network operations.
Pricing and Availability
Available for order now, the Demarc 100 suggested list pricing starts at under $10,000 for a configuration of two 10/100 Ethernet, one OC-3 MM with shaping, performance monitoring and OAM (Operating, Administration and Management) support. The unit supports 10/100 Ethernet, IETF RFC 1483 Ethernet encapsulation, circuit emulation services (CES), ATM interfaces ranging from T1/E1 to OC-3MM/SM, and SONET APS.
