Mike: I thought the news on China adopting CDMA2000 was pretty good too.

Here's another piece of good news: The U.S. patent office has reaffirmed the key QUALCOMM CDMA patent and actually added new features to it (news report this a.m.). Significance: No one can set up a 2G or 3G CDMA system without license or royalty arrangement with QUALCOMM. It's all over but the shouting. The patents win. It is immagerial whether we have W-CDMA or CDMA2000, since either way QUALCOMM will collect fees. As to whether GSM or CDMA ultimately prevail in the more mature markets, the answer to that is becoming clearer because of the superior capabilities of CDMA to handle more conversations on a single channel. CDMA is ALWAYS superior to GSM/TDMA in this attribute, no matter what the local signal condiditions, intereference, etc. GSM can handle about 3-5 conversations. CDMA under average conditions can handle about 10-15. Thus, CDMA is INHERENTLY more efficient and lower cost. I thought, even without this latest news, that QCOM would have no trouble reaching 100 this year. I made a mistake. It should have no trouble reaching 140-170 (pre-split). Investors will wonder why they didn't snap up the current bargain at 89! But the long term potential is even more important. The reaffirmation of that 1992 patent means that QCOM is probably the best long term investment opportunity (for the next five to ten years) in the entire market of stocks that are readily available at least to U.S. investors.
