SDTI news: 3/22/99 - ****Security Dynamics Plans Expansion In North Asia, China

SINGAPORE, 1999 MAR 22 (Newsbytes) -- By Martyn Williams, Newsbytes. Network security and encryption systems firm Security Dynamics Technologies Inc. (SDTI)
[NASDAQ:SDTI] will Wednesday announce plans to expand into the North Asia region, focusing on the as-yet unserved China market.

The company, which owns leading encryption systems company RSA Data Security, is opening a new office in Hong Kong to drive its business in the region and plans a
representative office in Beijing in the third quarter of this year.

"We are looking for more partners in China and are now working with several government departments and hope to make announcement in next few months," Simon
Naylor, vice president Asia Pacific for SDTI told Newsbytes.

The expansion marks a move by the company to do more business in Asia. At present, US export restrictions on its security systems have been a hurdle to widespread
Asian sales with the exception of Japan, where a blanket export approval was granted in 1996.

"Until January 1999, we couldn't sell any product without having to get one-off export approval authorization for each application," said Naylor of the problems.

To get around these problems, and also expand its research and development base, the company looked overseas for an additional software center and found a suitable
location in Brisbane, Australia. "In Brisbane there is very strong crypto talent, especially in Eric Young and Tim Hudson." The two developers, who are now employed by
SDTI, developed their own freeware, full strength version of the SSL encryption system, named SSLEAY, used on the World Wide Web..

With the establishment of RSA in Brisbane, the company has commercialized the freeware 128-bit key length software and development a commercial toolkit that can be
exported to foreign nations because, as it has been completely developed in Australia, is immune from US export restrictions concerning the technology.

Working from an Australian base doesn't mean the company can send the system anywhere, explained Naylor. "We are working closely with the Australian government on
export issues. Basically, we can export the 128-bit key version it to any nation that is a signatory of the Wassenaar Arrangement."

For non-Wassenaar nations, approval can usually be obtained and Naylor sees no problem in exporting the software to almost any country in the region. "As long as we
work with sensible organizations, we don't foresee any problems," he said.

Nations in the region that have signed the Wasennaar Arrangement are Australia, Japan, New Zealand and South Korea.

Over the coming months, Naylor sees the Internet as a potentially major market in the region. "Eighteen months ago, security was considered a risk management tool but
now, with things like e-commerce and online trading, security is becoming mandatory."

A second major market for the company is remote access, controlling and watching over gateways into internal networks. SDTI's ACE server can protect these gateways
and its new Keon system can control and track systems and software from snooping by users inside a corporate firewall.
