E's brilliant quote - "it's not about them, it's about us" - suggests that pure altruism is an abstraction. There are sound principles of self-interest in Steven's decision, and the motive is perhaps capsularized in the quote. While in the short term there is a wishful element in the logic chain (if I do this for someone without obvious redeeming value, then perhaps one day if I am so unfortunate, someone will grant me comfort) in the long term cause and effect obtain. Such an act is evaluated and adapted/adopted by the members of society, and with time the world becomes a nicer place without a single act/policy that wasn't individual initiative.
So I submit you should stand behind such things as triumphs of individual affirmation of our human destiny. To rise above our animal matrix...

Oops, If I had known that you were monitoring the thread I wouldn't have been talking behind your back. Wouldn't you at least slip evil Steve a fiver to help defray his expenses?

All acts of pure altruism are evil.

Have you never been the beneficiary of an act of pure altruism?

Think carefully.

<<All acts of pure altruism are evil.>>

So you believe that there is, or could be, such a thing as an act of pure altruism? That's so idealistic and cute of you!
