Reagan couldn't get his defense budget passed without allowing the Dumbocrats to pass their entitlements legislation. Which proved more efficacious...the huge debt that's been accumulating from the seemingly everlasting entitlements programs, or the defense spending that brought an end to the Cold War?
The GOP's spending did benefit the large contractors by extension, but the entitlements were very much like the Roman senate buying grain for the prols.
