OT PIII turn-off "switch",
The type of thing that worries me about a serial number would be the following hypothetical situation.

Let's say I setup an online purchase account with Expensive Gadgets are US. They use my serial number as the key for encryption for transactions. Someone could snoop around my computer for the key and buy more gadgets than I do. Something like this could happen anyway, but is more likely if all the online stores start using the same identifer for customers. The more fragmented the interface, the harder and less profitable it is to hack.
