Image Power's JBIG2 Technology Under Review by Major Internet Fax Vendor

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, March 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Image Power, Inc. (Vancouver: IPZ) announced today the company's JBIG2 technology was shipped to eFAX.com (Nasdaq: EFAX) under a conditional purchase agreement for possible integration into eFAX.com's Internet fax service and related product initiatives. JBIG2 is the new black and white image compression standard recently published in draft form by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). JBIG2 is the result of two years of joint development effort by Image Power and other JBIG2 committee members to develop a new coding standard for bi-tonal image compression. JBIG2 is designed to replace G3, G4 and JBIG in desktop and embedded applications. The eFAX.com application of this technology is the first potential mass market application of JBIG2. Image Power is the first company to introduce a commercial software version of the JBIG2 standard for the Windows desktop.

JBIG2 reduces the size of G3, G4 and JBIG images by up to 4:1. JBIG2 was developed to fill a need in the fax machine, printer and desktop markets for a new black and white compression technology. Applications for JBIG2 include Internet fax, next generation fax machines, multifunction peripherals and printers. The new Image Power Version 1.2 JBIG2 codec incorporates several enhancements including support for lossless and lossy bit streams with full bit stream compliance with the Xerox PARC JBIG2 decoder.

Image Power, Inc. is a leading provider of next generation standards compliant still image compression technology and products for the desktop, embedded and Internet imaging markets. These products include JBIG2, Wavelet based color compression and compound document compression (T.44 MRC) codecs compatible with the new color fax standard (TIFF-FX). These compression codecs are packaged in the Power Software Development Toolkit (SDK). Version 1.2 of the Power SDK is the result of joint development by the company and researchers at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Image Power and UBC are hosting the next meeting of the ISO SC29 JBIG, JPEG and MPEG meeting in Vancouver, BC, July 12-16, 1999. Additional information on the ISO meeting is available at spmg.ece.ubc.ca/sc29.
