Gigabit Ethernet Spec Ready To Roll

The specification for Gigabit Ethernet over copper is as good
as complete, and IT managers should begin to see product
releases based on the technology before the end of the year.

The technology, or 802.3ab as it's referred to by the Institute
of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, was expected to be
ratified this month. Technicalities in the editing and review
process of the draft will push that back five months, the
Gigabit Ethernet Alliance (GEA) recently announced.

The IEEE Standards Board is expected to formally ratify the
specification at its September meeting. But that won't impede
the delivery of products. Seven silicon vendors, including
Level One Communications Inc. and Broadcom Corp., said at
the recent IEEE meeting in Austin, Texas, that they will
immediately begin to develop products based on the
specification.

IT managers are eyeing Gigabit Ethernet over copper for
server connections and high-speed desktops, two areas where
the cost of fiber could be offset. Fiber is the only medium that
currently supports Gigabit Ethernet. -- John Fontana
