DenverTechie, thanks for your qualitative response to my "whither Covad?" inquiry. Been out of town for a while; sorry not to get back to you earlier.
I actually started following COVD maybe 2 years ago as a result of a story in (Red Herring, Forbes, Fortune, god knows what periodical)which said something like the following. [foggy memory, accuracy not guaranteed, but hopefully the main thrust is intact]
Seems that the boys at Intel's mother ship Santa Clara HQ's were so honked off about the lousy internet connections they had, and even more outraged at the total lack of response from Pac Bell who kept weakly waving ISDN and some day DSL at them, that they took affairs into their own hands. That is to say, they kind of jump started Covad with money and Intel management with the proviso that COVD set up shop right next store to INTC and DO SOMETHING about getting bigger pipes into the shop. Now I may have this screwed up and/or the article that I read may not have gotten it right, but that's my recollection.
In any event, I tend to get all warm and fuzzy when Intel is behind a new technology (gave me the courage to buy Rambus for example) but this one just launched before I could take a position at some price I could sleep with.
Thanks again for your response: COVD will remain on my watch list but not, for the moment at least, in my portfolio. Kind regards, Mike Doyle
