Hopefully for the people there, the worst is over, oil revenues will rise and benefit the whole country. Chavez is apparently working to revise the tax laws which presently are terrible for foreign investment outside the oil sector. The effects of the prior administration will be felt for a while, but things should be on an upward track. Many people believe the prior administration's set course of breaking their OPEC promises as a matter of policy is what was a key element in the collapse of worldwide oil prices.
Maybe things will get safer for you folks living there soon as well. Keep your guard up until then.
