Hutchinson Technology (HTCH) BUY $26.75 FY99 E: $2.45 FY00 E: $3.30
Todd Bakar tbakar@hamquist.com
Recent sell-off is overdone, creating buying opportunity
Shares of HTCH have been very weak over the past month given concerns about
demand for both PCs and disk drives as well as the risk of missing its FQ2
results. We continue to believe HTCH will meet our $0.54 EPS estimate despite
the softness in disk drive demand that hit in Feb/Mar. Moreover, we still
believe FQ3 can be up Q-Q. HTCH remains the best positioned of the component
companies. Business is not booming, but it is not bad either. Yet, stock is now
heavily discounting near-term problems. Thus, we would use the recent pullback
as a buying opportunity.>>

And this from Z on the Hutchinson thread:

<Montgomery lowered stock target to $40 but maintained Buy rating and Earnings. Said March qtr not at risk but concerned about future qtrs since belive IBM and Toshiba losing notebook share to Fujitsu and Hitachi which don't use TSA. Also, concerned that IBM losing high end market share to SEG. >

Is the last stand for profit, notebook drives, finally under attack and will we see them slide into a profitless pit that has hurt other categories?

Fujitsu again. I sure hope this company show us they know how to do it better, and not just they know how to ruin a market and take big losses along with everyone else. Of all the companies to be gaining marketshare, it seem like the one least profitable to anyone trading shares in the US market.

Regards,

Mark

Stitch,

<<My personal view is that we will see a Summer rally in tech stocks that will rival previous rallys>>

Hey! Someone willing to stick his neck out and make a positive prediction.

Trouble is I have difficulty agreeing with you. Summer is usually the cyclical pits for the PC/HDD segment in particular, so what do you see out there that will buck that typical trend??

Regards,
LT

Stitch,

Thanks for your response. I'll toast to it.

It seems E-commerce relies on technology. As do a great many other things. In many ways its still an exciting time in IT. I tend to agree with you. But that and $1.50 might get you a cup of coffee here in the states.

I find the quality of my life is often aided by many days away from things pc.

Cheers,
Lee
