Microsoft to Unveil New Digital Music Format, L.A. Times Says

Redmond, Washington, March 23 (Bloomberg) -- Microsoft Corp., the world's largest software maker, is about to unveil a new technology that will allow computer users to download digital music recordings twice as fast as anything currently available, the Los Angeles Times reported, citing unnamed sources. The new technical format, called MS Audio 4.0, reportedly will sound better than files currently available in a popular digital format called MP3 and will include an encryption technology called Secure ASF to help prevent illegal duplication or theft of the music files. The technology is expected to be included in Microsoft's Windows Media Player 4.0, which could be released as soon as next month, the paper said.

Representatives of some of the world's largest music and technology companies, including Microsoft, have been meeting biweekly in Los Angeles to develop a uniform standard for encrypting, or ''watermarking,'' digital music files to prevent piracy over the Internet. (3/23, C10, www.latimes.com)

The only thing that Allen is doing is putting Go2net in a position to be bought out by/merged with ATHM. Allen is about making $$, plain and simple.

There is simply no way that his cable initiatives (including Go2net) will win a long term competition with ATHM (AT&T). He is in it for the buyout/consolidation play after ATHM is merged with RoadRunner.
