DWP Invites Public to Year 2000 Meetings
12:03 p.m. Mar 23, 1999 Eastern

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 23, 1999--What is the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power doing to prepare for the year 2000, also known as Y2K?

City residents and business owners are invited to attend a presentation and have their questions answered on DWP's Y2K readiness program.

A series of public meetings will be held, beginning on Thursday, March 25, at 6 p.m., in the auditorium of DWP's General Office Building, 111 N. Hope St., in downtown Los Angeles. The second meeting will be held on Thursday, April 29, at the same time and location. Subsequent meetings will be held as needed.

"We expect to be successful in our Year 2000 Date Readiness Project," said John Dennis, Y2K project manager. "Among our goals is to keep our customers informed of our progress. These meetings will provide an excellent opportunity to meet with customers and explain our readiness program, and answer any questions they may have with regard to the delivery of their water and energy services."

According to Dennis, DWP's presentation will cover its compliance program, contingency planning, communications and controls.

"Our goal is to have all of our mission-critical systems ready for the year 2000 by June 30th of this year," said Dennis. "Our management has taken this issue very seriously and has taken steps to minimize the impact of any Year 2000 date-related problems."

DWP's project encompasses the mainframe computer and its business application software; the distributed desktop computer systems; and systems with embedded microprocessors (also known as embedded chips). The plan also includes a contingency plan to provide alternative methods to deliver water and energy to customers should an unforeseen Y2K event arise.

For more information on the public hearings or DWP's Year 2000 Date Readiness Project, customers may call the Y2K Hotline at 213/367-4Y2K or refer to the Y2K Web site at www.ladwp.com.
