3/22/99 - Brazil: Canbra to invest R$1bil

Canbra, that won the concession to compete with the fixed telephones holding Tele Norte Leste plans to set up 1.6mil telephone
terminals until end 1999 in 20 cities in the area it covers, of which 500,000 in Rio de Janeiro state. In April Canbra will start
contracting equipment & services and will invest R$400mil in 1998, a figure to reach R$1bil until end year 2000. Qualcomm is one
of the partners in Canbra, another is Bell Canada, that has a share in Nortel, and is natural that it gives preference to acquire
equipment form its partners. Other shareholders in Canbra include WLL International, Lieberman group, and Taquiri. Canbra will use
WLL technology, and will have to offer competitive prices to win customers.
