Steven,

<<I've long been under the impression that copper is pretty much a sunset industry, as the metal is rapidly being replaced in many industrial applications. >>

While there has been some replacement in a few areas like fiber optic cable and plastic plumbing in homes, the basic use of copper in electrical applications has continued to grow. Total refined consumption for the 1990's has grown at a 3.0% compounded annual rate. This is better than the growth rate for oil usage. The driver of this growth has been Asia (excluding Japan) which has grown at 7.4% during this period and is approaching 20% of world total consumption. Copper is absolutely a bet on the developing world. It is a necessity for the continued modernization of the world.
