Do you think the hardrive in a Dell laptop will use the standard IDE interface cable connection?

Good question. I do not know. I had an old Compaq laptop that used a standard IDE connection.

You can not get a DOS prompt either, and I tried everything including pulling the battery while it was running to trigger a fault that I hoped would lead to safe mode.

You can probably get to the DOS prompt with the F8 key during boot...it will also give you a safemode option. You should be able to copy files to the A drive. If there are a lot of files...and lots of MBs then the floppy routine could take a long time.

Thurston:

If you get a DOS prompt up, I have a DOS program called FastLynx for back-ups and copying multiple files from computer to computer across the Laplink type cable. I have successfully emailed the program to others in the past.

How's the Professor?
