My understanding of Jini is that it is based on Java (as it stands today, rather than its early days). I can't remember the details, but when it was introduced, Morgan Stanley issued a positive report titled Not Another Acronym Starting with J. I can look up the report again, but this is the first time that I've heard of HAPI. I should also point out that Java chips have been out for quite sometime now and that Java has won a lot of support lately.
