Telergy Teams with Nortel Networks to Unveil Advanced, End-to-End Optical Network

New York-based Integrated Communications Provider to deliver

unprecedented regional network that combines the reliability and capacity

of fiber optics with the power and flexibility of the Internet

SYRACUSE, NY, March 24 /PRNewswire/ - Telergy, a New York-based integrated communications provider, announced today that they have selected Nortel Networks (NYSE: NT/TSE: NTL) to supply the equipment and services necessary to extend the region's first end-to-end optical network. Creating a statewide network that is tied to a central core of resources with high speed Internet access, Telergy's optical infrastructure is the first to use Nortel Networks' latest optical Internet technology to build a bandwidth-rich, super-speed community network enabling next-generation applications. The parties expect the value of the three-year deal to be approximately US$ 200 million.

Our strategy is to provide customers throughout the entire state of New York and beyond with the highest capacity Internet solutions. This will include the creation and deployment of applications that until now people have only dreamed about. Bandwidth will no longer be a concern,'' said Brian Kelly, CEO at Telergy. ''Nortel Networks' open optical strategy will provide the reliability, capacity, and network versatility for Telergy to extend our network to meet the rapid demand resulting from bandwidth hungry applications.''

From large businesses, universities and hospitals to the residential market, Telergy's first-of-its-kind optical network will provide rural and urban communities across the Northeast Region, including New York and surrounding states, with access to scalable video-intensive services and applications. Communities in both rural areas as well as those in metropolitan New York City, for example, will receive the same levels of access, including high speed data and high speed transport, to Telergy's network. The result will be a network infrastructure capable of strengthening the economic development of the region, while providing a realization of unprecedented high-speed Internet access for applications ranging from telemedicine to distance learning to the deployment of the latest in Voice over IP (VoIP).

Telergy is a home-grown New York company with a strong commitment to economic development in the Empire State,'' said New York Governor George E. Pataki. ''The Telergy Optical Network is a technological development that will enhance business development in the State and make the most advanced technology available to all New Yorkers, urban and rural alike.''

The optical networking solutions to be used in the Telergy network include open optical products for long-haul applications which were recently unveiled by Nortel Networks. Nortel Networks' open optical OPTera LH platform enables any type of signal to be directly transported over light using Dense-Wavelength Division Multiplexing (D-WDM). With D-WDM, the light is split into various colors, each carrying IP, SONET SDH, ATM or Ethernet signals, to maximize the capacity of the system. The network will also use Nortel Networks' industry-leading Integrated Network Management (INM) system for end-to-end network visibility and control.

Telergy's network will allow us to connect hospitals across upperstate New York creating a faster exchange of information for outcomes data, benchmarking, medical imaging, etc.,'' said Gary FitzGerald, CEO of Iriquois Healthcare Alliance, a consortium of over 60 hospitals in 31 counties ranging from Albany to Rochester to the Canadian border. ''Telergy is offering something incredibly unique through their cutting-edge technology, aggressive pricing structure and service arrangements. Telergy's selection of Nortel Networks makes a lot of sense.''

Telergy will be able to offer enterprise customers access starting at optical OC-12 rates. In addition, with Nortel Networks' 1-Meg Modem technology, Telergy can provide its residential and small business users with access speeds of up to 30 times faster than traditional dial-up modems.

We identified Nortel Networks as the best supplier for our needs,'' said Kelly. ''Their end-to-end and sustainable product technology, Terabit networking capabilities and network design expertise are superior within the industry.''

Nortel Networks' optical networking equipment already carries more than three-quarters of the backbone Internet traffic in North America,'' said Clarence Chandran, president of Carrier Packet Solutions, Nortel Networks. ''Coupled with the fact that Nortel Networks is the leader in the 10 Gbps market worldwide, we are also at the forefront in the provision of high-capacity, reliable and manageable optical networks.''

Telergy's network will utilize highly prized, utility rights-of-way, providing safe, secure routes for their optical fiber cables. By utilizing Nortel Networks' open optical platform, the Telergy backbone network will have the versatility to flexibly handle both IP centric traffic as well as mission critical transactions while being able to carry up to 320 Gbps of information on a single fiber. This capability is available today from Nortel Networks -- the highest per-fiber capacity in the industry.

In addition to optical networking and high speed access products, Nortel Networks' solution will also provide Telergy with a complete unified solution including Nortel Networks' DMS Switching systems, high speed routers and UE9000 Access products.

Founded in 1995, Telergy has used its relationships with various electric and gas companies to secure more than 15,000 miles of utility rights-of-way, including those of Niagara Mohawk, New York State Electric & Gas and Consolidated Edison. The Telergy fiber optic network gives the company access to over 10 million commercial and residential users.
