China calls for end to NATO air strikes

BEIJING, March 25 (Reuters) - China on Thursday demanded an immediate halt to NATO's air attacks on Yugoslavia and called on Belgrade and the international community to make efforts to bring peace back to the region.

''The Chinese government strongly demands an immediate halt to the surprise military action against Yugoslavia,'' the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

''The Chinese government feels deeply worried,'' the statement said.

China had always been against ''using any pretext to interfere in the internal affairs of a country,'' it said. ''The right of each country to voluntarily choose its path of development should be respected.''

In Milan, Chinese President Jiang Zemin also called for an immediate end to NATO's bombing blitz against Yugoslavia and a return to negotiations to restore calm in the Serbian province of Kosovo.

Yugoslavia declared a state of war on Wednesday as waves of NATO warplanes pounded Yugoslav military targets at the start of a campaign to force Belgrade to accept an international peace plan for Kosovo.
