International Yogurt Introduces New Bottled Smoothie Drink Through Wal-Mart Superstores
PR Newswire - March 24, 1999 08:15

Move Marks Entry in Retail Market

PORTLAND, Ore., March 24 /PRNewswire/ -- International Yogurt Company (Nasdaq: YOCM), a manufacturer and wholesaler of frozen desserts and beverages, is entering the retail market with a bottled fruit smoothie which will be offered initially in 150 Wal-Mart superstores.

"This is our first bottled drink for direct consumer purchase," said Terry Lusetti, Manager of Retail Sales. The company has been selling its products to foodservice customers such as restaurants and institutions since 1980.

"We are complemented to be presenting this all-natural fruit beverage through Wal-Mart," Lusetti said. Product demonstration is scheduled in early April in selected Wal-Mart superstores which represent approximately 25 percent of the 600 superstores now in operation. The YOCREAM(R) Smoothie branded drink is all-natural and will compete in a beverage sector that is growing in popularity among health conscious consumers.

"This new beverage introduction reflects the company's strategy to build on its strengths," John Hanna, CEO and Chairman of the Board, explained. "We were able to develop the technologically advanced process to meet the requirements for texture, flavor, bottling and shelf life -- all in a relatively short time frame. It was the combination of a top research and development staff, existing high quality standards and manufacturing flexibility that resulted in this successful effort."

The drink will be sold in the Wal-Mart stores under the Bountiful Harvest name. Hanna said that it is expected that the bottled fruit smoothie will have a significant impact on the company's overall sales. The company is exploring opportunities for the sale of the product in the foodservice sector as well.

International Yogurt Company makes, markets and sells frozen dessert, snack and beverage items throughout the United States and in several foreign countries. For the fiscal year ended October 31, 1998, the company had sales of $10.2 million, up 18 percent from the prior year. Sales for the first quarter of fiscal 1999 were up 35 percent.
