That seems like a VERY high percentage of institutional ownership. A lot of investors will stay away from a stock with that big a following. Bill O'neil of IBD recmmends a level much lower than that, I believe.

I think it might be good to draw a distinction between institutions and mutual funds though, as the latter may be more constrained in their stock choices by the fund's charter, but I don't know enough about how the institutions are guided to say.

I believe IBD tracks mutual fund ownership for each stock. Might be worth a trip to the library to see how this has fluctuated relative to the stock price over the last few years.
