not entirely true,

I know that Remote Explorer has been in the wild in Europe also. But I agree it was mostly a handle for NETA to point out their antivirus labs' worldwide availability.

These press releases are like buying a car and still watching the commercials to feel reassured that you made the right choice, even though you will not consider buying another one soon.

It's good to know they are watching over our well-being...

CIH is a nasty virus by the way. All: download those updates!

M.

>>In my never-to-be-humble opinion, press releases about "new" virus strains are primarily issued to add fear and loathing among the minions who then, it's hoped, rush to the nearest source and purchase antivirus software. Yes, there's some risk from these viruses, but it's rarely as widespread and dire as the releases would have you believe. Remember when NETA issued the releases about the Remote Explorer Virus? Turned out that it never even left the walls of the company where it was "discovered". Many thought it was just a ploy on NETA's part to get some last-minute sales for the end of the quarter.<<

Cindy I think you are really wrong here. Most AV companies give out FREE trial versions. And it is important to try them out. I know of a very close friend of mine whos life got totally wiped out with michaelango virus. She had to even change professions due to it. Isnt even one life worth it? I know quite a few people who had major losses due to viruses. Scaring people is one thing but informing them it for the good off all. And if you read the news groups you would have found remote explorer did get out. And the news came out in the slow season for upgrades and buyers, heck most people who buy stuff were on vacation. I think the hoopla was only because NETA got the samples and others did not. But thats a political issue and nothing to do with threats outstanding.
