From one of the article links you posted. As stated by most analysts, GSM will always be the dominant 2G network. Quite happy with other people getting a little slice of the action, little being the operative word here.

Cheaper it is not, better maybe, late it certainly is...just when everyone else is moving on to the next systems (don't say that cdmaOne is, it is that way in the US because of ridiculous FCC auction policies and allocation of spectrum, implemented by a fool now helping the CDG (Is that a coincidence?)).
